91pts Wine Enthusiast
A plethora of aromas waft out of the glass, suggesting raspberry, strawberry, red plum, red roses and violets, along with deeper notes of cacao, toasted wood and forest floor. The palate confirms these flavors and brings fine-grained tannins that add a delicate backbone. Acidity injects a dose of freshness and uplifts those lively red fruits.
91pts James Suckling
Mulberries, cooked plums, stewed strawberries and cinnamon stick on the nose. Fruity and full-bodied with stemmy tannins. Ripe while retaining tangy zesty elements and spicy complexity.
Winemaker NotesAt Terra d’Oro, the Zinfandel grapes are carefully picked at night and brought to the winery for processing. After fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine is aged in a combination of French and American oak (24% new) for 15 months resulting in subtle caramel notes with indications of exotic spice.
About the Winery
For more than 150 years, fortune seekers have been lured to California’s rugged Sierra Foothills. Though they once came for the gold, these days they come for the wine—Terra d’Oro, to be more specific. Handcrafted from some of Amador County’s most historic vineyards, these wines are rich indeed, full of the character and intensity that perfectly captures the essence of this “Land of Gold.” As the first new post-prohibition winery in the Sierra Foothills, Terra d’Oro helped to return both Amador County and Zinfandel to the attention of fine wine aficionados everywhere and to remake the Sierra Nevada foothills as one of the best wine regions around.
